Gasshku Challenge

Last year we talked about the 20 hour challenge and attempting to train 20 hours a week during the Aikido College summer training camp.  We've had gasshku visitors counting the number of classes they do per day/week but until now, nobody has logged the total number of hours spent on the mats for the duration of their gasshku stay.  The first to do that are Catherine Maltais and Zan Rosborough from the Makotokan Dojo, who trained with us for 3 months, 2 of those as live-in students.  Over that time, they logged a combined total of 268 hours on the mats.  Impressive!  More than 6 times the minimum hours required to obtain your private pilots license...

Gasshku champions.

If world-class aikido instruction and all those hours on the mats are not enough to tempt you, here are some upcoming events worth planning an itinerary around:

•28th & 29th - Cafe Terrace in Sakaigawa is an annual event with open-air food stalls; live music and other entertainment held along the Sakai River in Urayasu.  The highlight of each day is the yomeiri-bune or Bride's Boat, a Japanese tradition in which a wedding couple in wedding kimono rides a Japanese-style rowing boat along the river as spectators toss rose petals and shout good wishes.

•18th & 19th - Urayasu Sanjya Matsuri is city-wide festival held once every 4 years (in the same year as the Olympics.)  The festival celebrates the 3 major shrines in Urayasu with omikoshi (small portable shrines) from each neighborhood joining in a parade around the city.  Urayasu is already gearing up for this festival with colorful lantern and poles going up everywhere.

•16th & 17th - Ryu Summer tests
•30th - Fireworks in summer is a wonderful Japanese tradition and the Urayasu Summer Fireworks Festival is held every year with around 6,500 fireworks exploding up over Tokyo Bay.

•1st - 7th is the 18th Annual Summer Training.  7 consecutive days of 6 am training in the hottest time of the year.  One way to get your total hours up!
•7th - Ryu Summer Festival!

•11th - 4th Annual Ichihara City Aikido Demonstration, hosted by Mitsuhashi Shihan's Soryu Dojo.

•16th - The 29th Annual Yamanashi Yoshinkan Aikido Demonstration hosted by Takeno Shihan and the Yamanashi Yoshinkan.
•22nd - The 61st Annual All Japan Yoshinkan Aikido Demonstration.

•20th & 21st - Ryu Okinawa 10th Anniversary Tour and Demonstration.  Click here for more details!

•17th & 18th - Winter tests

•18th -  Winter party
•23rd - Dojo `spring` cleaning

January 2017:
•8th - Urayasu City Aikido Association Kagamibiraki Demonstration

•9th - Special New Year Seminar; Ryu New Years Party and Kagamibiraki

February 2017:
•1st - 7th - 18th Annual Winter training
•11th - 13th Annual Junior Aikido Tournament and 10th Annual General Training Seminar
